Stop Telling Girls
Here are some things I think we as a society need to stop telling girls.
1. Being married gives you worth.
We really need to stop making girls feel like they NEED to be married and that if you aren't married by a certain age then there is something wrong with you. The worst part about this is that we on the other hand make boys feel like marriage is some type of trap that's awful and damns the entire rest of your life. So who exactly are these girls suppose to marry IF they aren't gay? We end up leading these girls down a horrible path of rushing to get married, sadly many of which I've seen end up being in a loveless marriage.
2. Your appearance determines how attractive you are.
I feel like I shouldn't need to say this anymore but here we go. Stop making girls feel like they aren't attractive if they aren't skinny, are skinny, have curves, don't have curves, are short, are tall, wear makeup, don't wear makeup, have long hair, have short hair, have light skin, have dark skin, have medium skin, have clear skin, have acne, are hairy, etc... Just stop, for the love of all that is good, STOP. Can we just teach girls that who they are is fine and teach them to focus on being good people because that's what is really matters.
3. Women are weak.
THIS...NEEDS...TO...STOP! Women are not weak. We are the epitome of strength. We have to carry so much on our shoulders, we have to deal with so much inequality yet we still conquer. We take care of things even when we are sick or are dealing with evil periods. We give life! We have to deal with people assuming because we are women we can't do as much as a man or do things as well as a man. We have a million things we are told we can't be, or can't do while men are told they can do it all. Yet we still make it to the top!
4. You are meant to be at home with the kids or have to do a "woman's job".
Firstly I would like to say there is nothing wrong with CHOOSING to stay at home. Hell I work from home and I prefer to be at home, but I choose to do so. Stop making girls feel like they HAVE to be stay at home moms because that's what they were meant to do or that they should only be doing jobs that are "for women". Women can be engineers, doctors, scientists, police officers, athletes, etc just like men can.
5. If you're a feminist you are crazy and hate men
This is just as crazy to me as saying that if you want equality for people of colour you hate white people. Since when did wanting things to be fair mean that you are crazy or that you must hate the people who have advantages over you? There is nothing wrong with fighting for your rights and there is nothing wrong with knowing what you are capable of. Wanting to be treated with respect and fairness does not make you crazy or hateful.
6. Girls aren't as smart as men.
